Airspace Closure: What Happens to My Car?

The most important thing first: your car is safe at Easy Airport Parking – even if the vehicle remains longer than booked. Longer and unplanned parking times are paid conveniently and contactlessly at the payment terminal at the exit barrier.

The holiday was wonderful, the bags long since packed – and then everything changes. Anyone currently stranded in Dubai, Israel or another country in the Middle East knows this feeling all too well: following the military escalation between Israel, the US and Iran, large parts of the regional airspace were closed in early March 2026, thousands of Europeans are stuck abroad, and the German federal government has launched an initial repatriation operation. But such situations are nothing new. The eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 also paralysed European airspace for days and millions of travellers were stranded worldwide. Anyone in that situation inevitably asks: what actually happens to my car waiting for me at the airport?

When is airspace closed?

An airspace closure is a relatively rare but entirely realistic scenario. Possible causes include military conflicts or political escalations in a region, natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, serious security incidents, and exceptional weather events.

Once an airspace closure comes into effect, flights to and from the affected region are cancelled or rerouted at short notice. For travellers, this means an involuntary wait at their holiday destination – with no clear end date.

By the way: The most severe airspace closure in recent history occurred in April 2010. Due to the ash cloud from the volcano Eyjafjallajökull almost all airports in Europe remained closed for several days. Around 100,000 flights were cancelled and millions of passengers were stranded.

What does an airspace closure mean for travellers?

In addition to the organisational challenges on the ground – accommodation, food, communication – those affected face a further question: what is happening at home? Who is looking after the pet? Who is managing important appointments? And: what about the car at the airport?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to all of these questions, but when it comes to parking, clarity can at least be established quickly.

What happens to the parked car?

The good news first: the vehicle remains safely on the car park. At Easy Airport Parking, all spaces are monitored by CCTV and are fenced – so the car is in safe hands even if the stay unexpectedly extends.

There is no requirement to make prior contact or actively extend the booking. The vehicle remains on site until the customer collects it – regardless of how long that takes. Anyone wishing to leave an electric car at the airport for longer will find additional tips in our guide.

Important information about payment on collection – and what does parking cost?

Anyone who finally arrives at the airport after an involuntary extension and collects their car pays the parking time beyond the original booking directly on site. The pricing is transparent and time-based: the first hour is free, each additional hour costs €1, and a full day (24 hours) costs €10. Payment is made conveniently and entirely cashlessly at the payment terminal at the exit barrier – contactlessly from inside the car, without queuing or desk contact.

Anyone who requires a receipt for their records or a possible insurance claim should specifically select the „Receipt“ option at the machine – a receipt is only printed when this option is actively selected. There is no automatic printout.

By the way: Anyone who wishes to claim additional costs through travel insurance or use the parking fees as a tax deduction should keep this receipt. In many cases it is the only proof of the actual parking costs incurred.

Tips for emergencies

An unforeseen extension of a stay abroad cannot always be prevented – but you can be well prepared:

  • Check your travel insurance: Many policies cover additional costs arising from extraordinary events – including extended parking charges.

  • Contact your airline and tour operator: They are usually the first point of contact for rebookings and repatriation options. Also find out about your rights in the event of a flight delay or cancellation.

  • Don’t forget the receipt when collecting: Actively select the option at the Easy Airport Parking payment machine – the receipt may be relevant for insurance or tax purposes.

  • Keep calm: The car is safe. One less source of stress in an already tense situation.

Whether it is a political escalation, a volcanic eruption or another unforeseen event – sometimes the return journey cannot take place as planned. With Easy Airport Parking, you need at least not worry about your vehicle: it is waiting safely for you.
