The History of Stuttgart Airport
Officially named “Stuttgart Airport – Manfred Rommel Airport,” it has a storied past. Aviation in Stuttgart began in the 1910s at what is now Cannstatter Wasen, initially used as a landing site for zeppelins. In 1924, Stuttgart Airport was established in Böblingen, marking its centennial in 2024.
In the 1930s, the airport moved to its current location, mainly in Echterdingen, leading to its former name, "Stuttgart-Echterdingen Airport," which it held until 2000. After World War II, the airport was rebuilt and later expanded. Discussions around further expansions arose repeatedly due to limitations like the nearby Weidacher Höhe, which initially restricted takeoffs at maximum weight. However, gradual improvements were made, the most prominent being Terminal 1, now a hallmark of the airport.
